The entire union territory of Andaman and Nicobar has been affirmed as ‘Restricted Area’ since 1963 under the Foreign (Restricted) Areas Order. Every foreigner, other than Bhutan citizen, who want to enter and reside in the Restricted or Protected Region, are required to get the special permit from a expert authority, known as Restricted Area Permit or RAP. RAP can be accessed simply on reaching Port Blair. The entire process takes around 15 minutes and is also free of cost for all foreigners. RAP is available for all foreign nationals and is originally issued for 30 days but can be extended for further 15 days with required documentation. Some Indian visas issued carry stamp that reads ‘entry to restricted areas NOT permitted’. To know whether your visa should carry such stamp, contact to embassy and have your visa reissued to enter the Andaman Island.
